One of the honorary combat awards of the USSR during World War II (Орден Отечественной войны). Instituted May 20th, 1942. (c. 1943 issue). Of three-piece construction of Gold, silver, and gilded silver, consisting of a red enameled five-pointed star with Gold straight rays (denoting I. Class) as well as a crossed saber and Mosin rifle in between the arms of the cross, with a central circular red enamelled medallion bearing a crossed Hammer and Sickle insignia in Gold, surrounded by a white enamelled ring inscribed “ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННАЯ ВОЙНА” (Patriotic War), the reverse with a screw-post and a threaded backing plate, mint marked "МОНЕТНЫЙ ДВОР" (Monetny Dvor) and number engraved "128474” by hand. measuring 43.8 mm (w) x 46.1 mm (l). 
In total, over 324,903 1st class medals were issued during the war.
